1933 American Airlines Hangar & Administration Building

Project Brief

Featuring Art Deco bas-reliefs, decorative pilasters and multiple-pane windows, this landmark hangar is noted on the National Register of Historic Places. Echelon’s client acquired it for conversion to a flight operations center for its private jets, but needed renovations to meet modern technical requirements and height clearances. Rather than raising the roof, Echelon helped develop and implement a plan to preserve all historic elements while rebuilding the surrounding structure to achieve clearances within the original volume. The newly remodeled hangar exemplifies the ambition of the industry’s first aviators — and now, it’s ready to serve a new generation of flight leaders.
